If you deal with eczema you are probably wondering what you can do to keep your skin feeling better and correct the problem permanently. Eczema can flare up at different times in your life and sometimes the cause is known, while at other times it may seem like a mystery as to what is causing it. Here are a couple things you can do for your eczema that can help to provide with relief.
1. Keep A Food Journal
Believe it or not, one of the main reasons people get eczema is from food allergies and food aversions. You may not think you have food allergies because you don't go into full anaphylaxis when you eat certain foods. But anaphylaxis is not the only sign of a food allergy. You can have a more mild reaction, one of them being on your skin. For example, if you have an allergy to milk your skin might react when you drink milk or eat ice cream. The eczema could stay for days even after you stop eating the milk because the food can stay in your system for some time. This is why it is important to keep a food journal to see if the eczema gets any worse or better when you eat certain foods. This will help you know if you need to eliminate anything from your diet.
2. Avoid Hot Showers
Because you are itching and burning from the eczema you might want to take hot showers and baths to relieve the discomfort. The concern is that the more hot water your skin is exposed to the more likely you are to have more irritation. It can become a viscous cycle. The hot water can dry you the skin making it crack and harming the eczema even more.
When you bathe, keep the water warm, but not hot. Try not to bathe everyday to avoid drying out the skin.
3. Keep Moisturizing and Hydrating
The key to keeping your skin healthy is to keep it hydrated and moisturized. The moisture from your skin will come from the inside. This means you should be drinking a lot of water. The more water you drink, the healthier your skin will be. Then be sure to apply a cream to your skin daily, if not a couple times a day. The cream will hold in the moisture and the hydration from your water intake.
